Happy New Year!

by Cassandra on 01/04/12

Happy New Year everyone!  This is an exciting year for Middle Eastern Dance as were opening up our on-line classes.  We're currently in the beta-testing stage (thank you to everyone who volunteered to help with beta-testing) and will hopefully be opening the classes to the public this summer.  Keep watching for updates on course information.  Besides the history class that is currently going I'm working on developing several other types of on-line supplement classes as well.  Additionally now that I'm mostly done with the course I can get back to updating the rest of the site so as a New Years treat I've just finished updating the hip lifts page and I added two new movement desriptions as well as three video tutorials to it.  Enjoy!  Keep an eye out for more updates I'm hoping to get phase II completed by the end of February which means all of the movements pages and props pages (including things like veil work, floorwork, cane, and sword) will be updated to the new look and hopefully have lots of video demonstrations to help you visualize the descriptions.  This year will be busy with updating the site and adding new features and information so I hope everyone has a great year and continues to benefit from all of the information here on the site.

Beta Testers Needed!

by Cassandra on 09/27/11

There's a lot of new changes going on here at Middle Eastern Dance and it's not just the look and organization of the site.  New and improved content is being added in as the site is updated page by page.  The styles of dance section was one such addition but there's more!  Another really cool addition to the site will be on-line classes.  These classes will be like continuing education for bellydancers.  The first course being introduced will be History of Middle Eastern dance 101: Ancient Origins.  Before the course opens to the public it needs to run through a series of beta testing.  Beta Testers will get an opportunity to take the course for free in exchange for offering feedback and reporting issues with course managments software and materials.  If your interested you can apply through the educational section of this site or send me an e-mail if it's not working yet.  The beta testing will begin in January 2012 but I need to get testers lined up and added to the roster before we can begin.  I'm looking for a variety of people but this does require a commitment and requires actually taking the class and doing the work in it as well so only apply if you can commit to it and actually want to take an opportunity to learn.

Phase II progress and site updates

by Cassandra on 09/22/11

Well everyone, Phase II of the sites restructuring and updates are at about 30% meaning most of the movements pages are done.  The majority of the left over pages are the specialty pages on using props.  Some of those pages will not take much time to convert because they do not all have or require the video demonstrations meaning they can be quickly converted to the new look.  Most of the broken links should be fixed  in this section now but if your having trouble from a page in the old site style make sure you are using the side navigation buttons instead of text links.  I also wanted to make sure everyone knows that although the directories are still working they 1. are not currently linked to the main page and 2. No new submissions will be added until I start updating that section.  So if you've submitted a form to be entered in the directory or if you have requested changes please be aware that it will be a longer wait than listed to get those changes made.  The updating of the site is my first priority right now.  Also, if there is anything that the site does not have that you would really like to see on it now's the time to make such suggestions since I'm moving things around and adding in new things.  I'd love to hear from the sites users what they really want to see here.

Ahalan Wa Sahalan!  Welcome to Middle Eastern Dance.  This site is an informational resource on Middle Eastern Dance.  Although the main focus is on what is commonly called "Belly Dance" there is information on other dances of the Middle East, North Africa, Mediterranean, Balkans, and the Indian Sub-continent.  My goal is to give people (dancers especially) easy access to understanding the dances and cultures from which they come.  With somewhere around 400 pages and growing this site is full of information to keep you busy.  Take some time to look around, you won't regret it.  I've tried to organize information into logical hierarchies so please explore.  Use the navigation menu at the top of the screen to check out the different pages.  There are hundreds of pages of how-to's many of which now feature video and other visual or audio aids.  Learn about history, music, styles and more.  If your a dancer looking to advertise your services for hire check out the Dancer's Directory, just fill out this form for a listing. You can also advertise you classes if you are an instructor in our classes directory by filling out the following form.  If you own a Middle Eastern or Mediterranean Restaurant or Deli and would like to list your Restaurant in our Restaurant section please fill out the following form.  Visit the chat room and talk with fellow dancers.  If you have a minute please take some time to vote in the polls.  Be sure to check back regularly to see what's new!
